blackbear is the stage name of LA-based producer and singer-songwriter Mat Musto, popularly known for co-writing Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend,” in 2012. Some of his first collaborations were with the likes of Pharrell Williams, MGK, and Childish Gambino. Later, Musto reinvented himself—he coined the name blackbear from a previous EP titled Year of the Blackbear. Under his new name, he started leaning more towards rapping and an R&B-oriented style.
His first mixtape Sex included collaborations with his peers James Blake, Maejor Ali, and “Boyfriend” co-writer Mike Posner. The Afterglow followed in 2014.
In 2015, blackbear released “idfc,” as the lead single from his debut album Deadroses. It increased his fan following and revenue, earning him millions of playback streams and a spot on Billboard’s Uncharted List of Undiscovered and Upcoming Artists. The second single, “90210,” included a feature from G-Eazy—blackbear made an appearance in his 2014 track, “Remember You.”
In that same year, blackbear released his sophomore record Help, which was a look into good and the bad lifestyle he has lived as a successful artist in the industry.
In 2016, Drink Bleach EP dropped as a “4/20” offering. He was joined, once again, by Mike Posner on “Obvious.”
In early 2017, the newly formed duo between blackbear and frequent collaborator Mike Posner, mansionz released “Rich White Girls”. This would go on to be one of the leading singles off their self-titled debut album, released on March 24, 2017. Mansionz would peak at #67 on the Billboard Top 200 List.
On the 1st of February, before the release of Mansionz, blackbear hinted at an album in a tweet: hell is where i dreamt of u and woke up alone 4/20. This album would go on to become digital druglord, released on April 20th, 2017, which featured the lead single “do re mi,” blackbear’s biggest song since “idfc.” “digital druglord” peaked at #14 on the Billboard Top 200 List, and “do re mi” peaked at #87 on the Hot 100 List.
In between the release of Mansionz and digital druglord, blackbear released the Salt EP, a collection of three short acoustic songs he allegedly recorded in a week up in the mountains of Salt Lake City after the girl he was with had left him there. Nobody knows who this girl is, but that’s what happened. blackbear didn’t put the Salt EP on his Spotify but it was released on his SoundCloud.
On November 27th, 2017 blackbear released his highly anticipated EP, cybersex. He began posting singles for this album on October 6th, 2017, with the release of the lead single for the EP, “playboy shit” with rapper lil aaron. cybersex has been marked as a “genre-bending” album, blending in multiple styles of blackbear, most importantly his older style, relating back to The Afterglow, which was blackbear’s first album, and his more recent, trap style, found in digital druglord, which was released in early 2017. cybersex includes features, from artists like Machine Gun Kelly, Rick Ross, T-Pain, and more.
The release of ANONYMOUS came on April 26, 2019. The album was originally planned to be released on Valentine’s Day 2019, but was pushed back due to his label and him wanting it to be perfect. While fans were waiting two months for the release, bear released 5 singles including “1 SIDED LOVE” and “SWEAR TO GOD”.
