John Butler Trio - Apr 09 - Byron Bay Bluesfest 2020

The John Butler Trio is an Australian roots and jam band formed in 1998 in Fremantle and currently consists of John Butler, Byron Luiters and Grant Gerathy.

The John Butler Trio was formed in Fremantle in 1998 by original members drummer Jason McGann and bassist Gavin Shoesmith on bass. However the consistent and current line up now consists of lead vocalist John Butler and accompaniment by Byron Luiters and Grant Gerathy. Despite line up changes, the alternative rock and blues grass sound has remained a constant in all of the John Butler Trio's releases.

The band began their career with two independently released albums, the second of which reached the top 30 in the Australian album charts and went on to achieve platinum sales. This was seen as The John Butler Trio's commercial break in Australia as the next three releases all went on to top the album charts. The 2004 LP 'Sunrise Over Sea' now holds a five times platinum selling certificate.

They have also achieved huge critical success in their native homeland over their career, winning an impressive four APRA awards from eleven nominations. Their first came in 2003 when 'Zebra' scooped the Song of the Year gong, whilst the most recent accolade was awarded to 'Close To You' for Blues & Roots Work of the Year. They have also picked up six ARIA awards from twenty-seven nominations, their latest album 'Flesh & Blood' picked up the Best Blues & Roots Album award.
