Monique Clare - Apr 04 - Lefty's Music Hall

Dancing between intricate, rhythmic cello lines, compelling lyrics and heart-tugging harmonies, Monique Clare is an award-winning cellist and singer-songwriter. Since breaking out as a solo artist in 2017, her songwriting has become increasingly daring and potent, with hard-hitting lyrics and an unconventional brand of classical-folk-pop cello. She’s played mountaintop sunrise concerts, taught cello in Afghanistan and travelled the world diving into folklore treasure troves. As the 2017 Folk Alliance Australia Young Artist of the Year she released and toured her debut EP and has been touring as a solo artist and a session musician since that time. She’s a skilled and versatile multi-genre cellist, having worked for bluegrass legend Darol Anger, Scottish fiddler Hanneke Cassel, opera-trained pop singer Kate Miller-Heidke and rapper Eminem. She currently tours internationally as part of The Maes (formerly The Mae Trio)

In 2016, Monique spent three months immersing herself in folk traditions and contemporary string playing in America, with grants from the Australia Council and Queensland Government. She has previously appeared in a number of projects, as a member of indie folk band The Mulberry Collective and award-winning traditional folk duo Rhiannon & Monique. She is a passionate educator, and has taught at Sunshine Fiddle Camp and Alasdair Fraser's Stringmania fiddle camp in Australia as well as running her own workshops and music camps. She holds a Bachelor of Music in classical cello performance from the QLD Conservatorium, where she was the 2015 Vada Jeffries award winner for solo Bach performance.
