SON- Susan O'Neill - Mar 21 - The Brewery

SON is the stage name of Susan O Neill, a woman who merges through song, a transnational melding of musical styles, encompassing the old and new.

The basis of her first album ‘found myself lost’ saw Susan being favourably compared with the likes of Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, a ‘ballsier’ Adele and Florence Welch. It was one of Hot Press magazine’s ‘Albums of the Year’ and garnered her a number of heavyweight fans – most notably U2’s Bono and Irish trad superstar Sharon Shannon (who invited SON to join her on a sold out tour of Australia and New Zealand).

SON was shortlisted as PureMzine’s ‘One to Watch’ but more recently won a trip to perform at the Milwaukee Irish fest in conjunction with Tradfest Temple bar.

Hailing from picturesque Co. Clare, the prodigiously gifted singer-songwriter honed her musical skills as one of the youngest members of the Ennis Brass Band and gained her first gospel influences with the Really Truly Joyful Gospel Choir.

‘In Clare, there is always a song in the air’

Later venturing to Waterford to study a BA in Music SON has been collaborating with festival favourites King Kong Company and Propeller Palms

Her solo career as SON has begun to piqued critical and industry interest. Eclectically fusing traditional Irish folk with rock, soul, gospel and blues, her live performances are quite simply electrifying. The amazing range of her husky vocals combined with her superb guitar technique, her loop pedals and trumpet, have wowed audiences everywhere from Stradbally to Sydney, Glasgow to Glastonbury, Manhattan to Milwaukee, and many places beyond.

2019 has been a typically hectic year so far, with a successful return to Oz and a scattershot tour of Europe already done, as well as a recording stint in Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in Wiltshire. SON is currently out on tour in Canada and North America, road-testing new material for her eagerly awaited sophomore album, due to be released next year.
